Thanks you guys for a wonderful Women’s Day experience!

As selfish as it seems, I sometimes wish that Melanie – for more than a number of years now, the architect of one of Cambodia’s psychedelic syndicates, ‘Squishy’ – would sit still. A spot of lesser melody and pitch that somewhat returns to her earlier sonics, Melanie’s TukTuk Session sadly trades a possible wonderful sense of place for a foggy vagueness that leaves Melanie’s insights mostly impenetrable.

Bits and pieces from every great Squishy record are present on this TukTuk Session, but the ease with which Melanie once combined these elements is now tenuous and hard-fought. Some of best melodic ideas simply get drowned out or rushed through, and Melanie often trips over the idiosyncratic vocal phrasings she once commanded so well.

A series of disconnected sketches with cheap faux cambodian eyewear, Melanie’s TukTuk session is not without its charm. Her atonal, Daniel Johnston-esque, voice evokes emotion, pain, and even joy in an abstract fashion. However, in saying that, I would have preferred a little more motodop in the foldback. but beggars can’t be choosers. keep up the good work Melanie. Look forward to your next Chapter

    • Pitchfork – wow. While we don’t quite have the same level of intimate knowledge about Melanie or her band Squishy we do agree there could have been a little more motodop in the feedback. Consider your point taken on board (the Tuk-Tuk).
Keep the comments coming. Insightful stuff.

I had the pleasure of seeing Melanie perform at Paddy Rice; just her, an acoustic guitar, those alluring eyes and that self assured smile. Melanie I was hooked before the first chorus… If you ever come to New Zealand, drop me a line.

My sister Sandra send me this link to know more about the culture of the place, it’s exciting to see how through a Tuk Tuk people can see and learn from other places. Great idea, nice voice!!!
